The First Snowdrop

Yesterday I found the first Snowdrop in flower in the garden.

The first snowdrop to flower in the garden

It is on the sunny side of the garden – those in the shade are in bud, but not actually flowering yet. They won’t be long though. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any in flower in January before. They usually appear in the first week of February.

We had several nights of frost a week ago. Here’s a fern looking pretty covered in frost.

Wonder if that’s all the winter we’re getting this year – or is that tempting fate! All the bulbs are putting up leaves but the only others in flower are a small clump of Scillas, just popping their heads above the ground.

I’ve got a large collection of Lenten Hellebores (Hellebores orientalis) which will be out shortly. I don’t seem to be able to grow the Christmas Rose (Hellebores niger). I buy them, plant them and they are never seen again! I saw some lovely ones in a shop the other day – labelled as Heleboris – perhaps a special variety from London!
